How to Broker Registration

Watch our quick user guide video and learn how to use the Broker Registration . Our instructions show how to automate, sync, and streamline document workflows without coding.

How to Broker Registration

To summarize the steps to get a freight broker license: 1. Obtain a Personal Identification Number (PIN) from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) website. 2. Submit an online OP-1 application for your MC authority on the FMCSA website. 3. If you want multiple licenses (e.g., broker and carrier), file separate Broker Registration applications. 4. If you are a carrier working in interstate commerce, apply for a USDOT number as a unique identifier for your company's safety records. 5. If you want to operate as a freight forwarder or carrier in addition to a broker, obtain liability insurance and submit proof to the FMCSA. 6. Obtain processing agents in each state where your brokerage will operate to address legal documents if a claim is filed against your brokerage in that state. 7. Submit a BOC-3 form to both the FMCSA and each state in which you'll be operating. 8. Obtain a $75,000 freight broker bond (BMC-84) to guarantee compliance with FMCSA rules and responsibilities. The cost of the bond depends on credit score, years in business, and other factors. 9. Obtain your Unified Carrier Registration (UCR) through the UCR website, which registers and collects fees from operators of vehicles engaged in interstate travel. Once you have completed these steps, you will have obtained your freight broker license and can legally operate as a freight broker.
